From the Beginning

Since 1983, Lake Champlain Chocolates has always been dedicated to sourcing the freshest local ingredients. Long before eating local became a trend, it just made sense to us to use the highest quality ingredients from local farmers and producers to craft our irresistibly delicious chocolates. When you are as passionate about crafting great tasting chocolate as we are, you only put best ingredients into your product - that why we've never added preservatives, extenders, or additives, and it is why we've worked diligently to remove GMOs from all of our chocolates and use organic ingredients whenever possible.

    Our production of Blue Bandana bean-to-bar chocolates continues to push the boundaries of chocolate sourcing - as a step toward realizing a direct trade and full traceability vision for Lake Champlain Chocolates. By developing win-win relationships with farmers in the Lachua region of Guatemala and becoming a founding partner of Cacao Verapaz, we are consistently striving to build a sustainable supply chain. By working with farmers at origin, and aligning post-harvest practices, farmers are consistently earning well above the typical fair trade premium ($200/metric ton) and nearly double the commodity market price. Social and economic impacts of these relationships are already being noticed in each village, with nurseries for future cacao planting now in their second year of operation. There’s a direct feedback loop with growers and associations, and that makes a huge difference in the end product.
